Kolkata is one of the world’s poorest and most polluted cities, with large slum areas.

In 2010, we had a dream come true to be able to provide schooling for children in the slums. We started with 50 school children and the number has gradually increased. There were several schools, and the largest of them had 300 pupils in 2019. The pupils were picked up every day by our school bus and taken to school. There they received 4 hours of teaching and a hot meal before being driven home.

From 2019, we have moved the school provision into five different slum areas, as it became easier for the children to get to school near where they live. It also became less expensive for us to operate. There are now 220 pupils in total at these schools. The remaining students have been given places in public schools in Kolkata. Grace English School (Kolkata) has provided school uniforms and books, so that the transition would not be too difficult.
Attendance at all five of our schools is completely free for all students. They are given uniforms, books and a meal every day.

Free Transport Facility

Grace English School (Kolkata) of Slum provides a dedicated school bus service to pick up pupils from their homes every day and bring them to school. This initiative is particularly aimed at supporting children from slum areas, ensuring they have access to education. Here are the key features of this service:
  1. Daily Pickup and Drop-off: The school bus collects students from designated points in slum areas each day and drops them back after school.
  2. Enhanced Safety: The service prioritizes the safety of students during their commute, providing a secure and reliable mode of transportation.
  3. Increased Attendance: By offering free and convenient transportation, the school helps improve regular attendance among students who might otherwise face difficulties reaching school.
  4. Support for Low-Income Families: This service is crucial for families who may not have the means to afford transportation, ensuring that financial constraints do not impede a child’s education.

Free Mid-Day Meals

Grace English School (Kolkata) of Slum not only provides daily transportation for pupils from slum areas but also ensures that each child receives a hot meal before being driven home. This initiative is designed to address both educational and nutritional needs, supporting the overall well-being of the students.
